Kilim Ottoman Coffee Table & Life

Lately, I've been thinking about changing out our coffee table for an upholstered kilim ottoman.  Currently, we have a live edge vintage wood coffee table (which I do like), but my husband is constantly using my lovely Turkish kilim pillows as cushions for his feet when he props them up on the table.  So not cool!  Since he just has to have his feet up, I figured I may as well make it more comfy for him and at the same time save my poor throw pillows.

Not to worry about the current coffee table, I'm planning to use it as a TV stand.  I've actually been looking for a cool low stand for the tele.  The coffee table should work out perfectly, since it has a bottom shelf for the VCR and cable box.

One of the local shops, I frequent, has kilim ottomans I've been eyeing for a while, but sadly they don't have any pics on their website, but I did find another one I like at Eco Chic.

This one is a bit pricey, but I do like it and it has a plethora of color options.  The ones at the other shop have more of a traditional Moroccan rug pattern (kind of like the throw pillow in the above pic). Decisions, Decisions.

In other news, the trainer at the gym has decided to torture me.  She put together my personal fitness plan and it's grueling.  I'm beginning to think that she believes I'm wanting to train to be some sort of an athlete (can you say Iron Man?!).  I think I need to explain to her that I really am only wanting to look halfway decent in a swimsuit.  My son is out for two weeks on school holiday, so it's messing with my routine.  I'm going to have to go to my classes and stuff in the evening now.
Fitness motivation

Also, we're going on our little mini vacation to the Taronga Zoo, in Dubbo, this coming weekend, so I'll miss a couple classes, but I'm told that the zoo is huge and we'll be renting bikes to ride around. I'll also be packing up the cooler and several totes with all our fruits and veggies and I'll be bringing the blender for our morning smoothies.  We plan to stay right on track with our plant based lifestyle.

My husband has still been rocking his weight loss and fitness.  Tomorrow is the last day of the fitness boot camp he's been attending, three days per week, and is signing up for another four weeks.  Our six year old is dying to attend boot camp too (they actually have one for kids) and says he's saving up all his money to go.  He's just a tiny little thing, but has been doing jumping jacks and sit ups every evening and eating all his fruits and veggies, in preparation.  He's always telling us that he needs his broccoli and avocados, because they're heart healthy foods.  We don't want to burst his bubble, just yet, but, we think, he's still a couple years away from going to a kid's boot camp.

Oh and one more (small) thing.  This past weekend my husband and I celebrated our seventeen year wedding anniversary.  He bought me a nice tripod for my new camera and said that he put some money back for our Bali trip, as my gift.  Plus, we are going on that little trip this weekend too.  It's funny, but looking back over all the years, it feels like we've lived so many different lives together (probably because we've lived so many places).  On one hand, it feels like the time has passed by in the blink of an eye, but on the other, so much has happened and changed over the past seventeen years (and pretty much all for the better).  It will be interesting to see what's to come.

Symmetric Living...

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but I have a thing for symmetry.  In college, my art professor told me, when she reviewed my portfolio, that I had the most symmetrical pieces of art she'd ever seen.  Odd, but true.  My eye just loves balance.

Today I wanted to share a living room I designed, intentionally, symmetric.  Actually it incorporates most of my loves...Symmetry, ethnic style and an eclectic mix.  I'll take two of everything, please...
if you see any pieces you like, you can find everything on my pinterest boards (look under lighting, art, furnishings, pillow love and home accessories/decor).

Final Delivery From Istanbul...

The last kilim pillow, I ordered, arrived on Friday, from Istanbul.  It was from the first vendor I ordered from and like the ones before, it's perfect!

Eventually, I'd still like to order a couple larger square pillows and maybe a pair of Euro size for our bed.  Can never have too many kilims!

Kilim & Calligraphy...

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but my husband works for the U.S. government, so our mail is shipped to an APO address.  The mail arrives at the airport in Sydney, so my husband sends one of his guys to pick up mail once a week.
Yesterday was mail day and we received a ton-o-mail!  We got a box from my Mom, with the calligraphy brushes she bought me for my birthday in it!  A package from Istanbul, Turkey, with two more of my Kilim pillows (I'm only waiting for one more to arrive).  And a big box of stuff we ordered from Walmart...filled with things we can't find here, like my husbands brand of deodorant, the laundry detergent we prefer, a few bottles of foundation, for me (they have it here, but it's $17-$23 a bottle vs. $5 at Walmart!)

Enough about our shipping process...I want to share some quick photos I snapped of my new vintage kilim pillows and my awesome calligraphy brushes...

first, I tried the calligraphy brushes on the coffee table (still planing to add a darker stain to the table)...

they were proving to be an impossible temptation for my son...Since the coffee table plan wasn't working out I decided to test them out on the mantel...

I plopped them inside a great orchid pot I bought in Korea...what do you think?  At least they're away from little hands...I can picture him sweeping the floor with them and then rinsing them off in the sink...YIKES!

also, two more kilim pillows have joined the family...

these two are from a different dealer in Istanbul, than the first two.  I do like them, but they smell strongly of cigarette smoke and aren't as nice quality or as clean as my other two.
While I understand they are made from vintage kilim rugs and won't be pristine, which adds to their charm, I was surprised that zero effort went into cleaning them up.  One had very noticeable dirt spots on it and when I scratched at it with my fingernail it started to flake right off, so I took a damp rag and gave it a little scrub and was able to clean it right up.
As for the ciggarette funk, I first sprayed them down with vanilla body spray (I had to do something quick they were that stinky!) and now I'm going to throw them in the dryer on fluff with a bunch of dryer sheets...I think this will work.

Again, for the deal I got on them, they're great...but, I have one more pillow arriving from the same dealer as the first two pillows, so I'm very excited to see if the quality remains as good...if so, he will be my go to source for Turkish kilim pillows.
Despite a little dirt and some odor, I couldn't be more thrilled with our new treasures!

Hawaii Condo: Living Room

It's snowballing, It's an avalanche!  But, it's just so fun!

The room basically has the look and feel of our existing home and of course we'll bring many of our favorite items to mix into the new space.  I think we decided to hold off on a new sofa, all together, now that we've becided to buy a place in Hawaii (unless we find something outstanding here).  It doesn't make sense to buy an expensive piece of furniture without knowing the demensions/scale of the room in a house that you're buying and will live in for a long time.

Is it bad that I'm now willing the time to pass by quicker, in Australia, so that I can design our new condo in Hawaii??  Crazy!  Needless to say, we still have a long road ahead of us.  Our son starts school next year (January), so I am going to find a job here.  We recently found out that I am aloud to work here, but it's quite the process, but they pay really well in Australia, so it's a money making opportunity I would be foolish to pass up.  Anyway, I hope I'm not boring you all to death with my, just for fun (for now), design boards.

Delivery From Istanbul...

Two of the five kilim pillows I ordered, from Istanbul, Turkey, arrived today!

I took some photos of them on our antique leather chair...

and a couple atop our vintage suitcases...

ultimately, their final resting place will be on the sofa.  I can't wait for the other three to arrive.  These two were from the same shop and I have to say that the quality is better than I expected and I'm totally in love with them.  Also, I can't believe how fast they arrived!  Honestly, I was expecting mid March.  I'd definitely order from this shop again.

A Few More Kilim...

pillows that I really liked, but sadly left behind...

when I chose my pillows I really limited my options by viewing only ones with free shipping.  At first I was just adding pillows to my cart that I loved and thought were a great price, but after shipping was added, I realized that the cost to ship one pillow, in some cases, was almost equal to the cost of the pillow.  Some of the ones above have free shipping and some do not.  However, even with the cost of shipping, they're still an amazing deal.  The last two are buy it now for $49 each with free shipping...I saw very similar kilim pillows the other day in a high-end retail shop, in Sydney, and they were $80+ each, so you're still saving almost 50% or more!

I mentioned to my husband that I've decided to treat myself to at least one kilim pillow per month, until I have the collection I want.  He just laughed and said whatever makes you happy...I think it's one of the best ideas I've had in a while!

1GS Picks & Design Board...

Soundslike Home, out of Sydney, has some great pieces and I found a couple things I may get for my home...

like these rattan tray tables.  They come in a set of 3 for $209!

and one of these cube side tables for next to our new sofa...it's white washed teak and only $121!
MULTI CUBE - WHITE WASH (30x30)
{multi-cube-white-wash}
I've been busy pulling together pieces that I'd love to add to our home.  This is what I've found so far...

we already have a similar coffee table and the carved Chinese piece is ours.
So we need:
  • New Sofa
  • Area Rug
  • Side Tables
  • Lamps
  • Kilim Pillows
  • I want a large turtle shell for the mantel
  • Large Mirror or Piece of Art for above the Chinese Console
  • Lamp for Console
  • Recover Our Mid Century Club Chair
Yes, $$$ signs are flashing before my eyes! I think I can pull the "look" together for around $3500 (not including recovering the club chair...that may remain on the to-do list). We want to have the room finished by August...that's when our first guests are coming for a visit!

Birthday Wish List...

My birthday is in February and I've been admiring a few things, so I thought I'd throw together a little post to give a few people some ideas....oh, and to share some cool stuff with you all...

{Graphic printed basket, papier mache tortoise shell, kilim pillow, kilim pillow, calligraphy brush, calligraphy brush, calligraphy brush}

Topping the list are a few kilim pillows and a collection of calligraphy brushes!  They seem to always make my yearly Christmas list and Birthday list...hint, hint!

LOVE...

Wanted to share some spaces that I'm in love with...

I love everything about this space...especially the amazing wallcovering!
{image}
 I love it when furnishings serve only to enhance beautiful architecture, instead of in place of, or as an attempt to disguise the lack of interest or detail in the bones of the space.  Starting with "good bones" sure makes decorating easier and the results are much more interesting!
{image}
What I wouldn't give to call this next space all mine!  This is my favorite screened in porch of all time!  Yes, it was love at first sight and has made me want to start collecting kilim rugs!
{image}
Do you have any rooms that you're in love with?  Is it a room in your own home or one that you've seen in magazines or online (like mine)?  Don't be shy, share...it's always nice to share!  I'd love to see your spaces and hear your thoughts!
