Signs of Hospitality...

The pineapple has long been a symbol of welcome and hospitality, but today it's made it's way onto the fashion and home décor scene, in a big way.  They're not only tasty, but beautiful, as well, and are popular to use when styling a home or party.  Let's check out where they've been popping up.

Welcome your guests to your home, while adding a graphic punch...

Island Style...

Everything about this image works for me.  I have a similar look going on in my own home, but my bamboo hall tree is on a smaller scale.  Having spent many years of my life on a tropical Pacific island, I can really appreciate the styling.

Speaking of Island Style, did I ever mention that it's the title of one of my favorite songs off one of my all time favorite albums, Acoustic Soul by John Cruz? Who am I kidding, every song on that album is a favorite...Seriously, if you haven't heard of it, you're totally missing out!

Design Board: Guest Bedroom Makeover

My Texas client (which you all know is also my Mother) will be turning what currently is her sewing/craft room into a guest bedroom.  She's moving her hobby room into a larger bedroom, once my brother moves into his own place.

We've been working together, on her home, since the pre-construction phase (about 2 1/2 years now...wow, that time flew by!) so, when she mentioned decorating a guest room I was eager to give her my thoughts.  I was trying to think of an overall concept or palette for her room and happened to be looking around, online, at Target and saw this bench covered in an adorable bird fabric.  Immediately I thought, "I just found our jumping off point!"  Then I thought that since I was already on the Target site, I may as well look around for some other fun stuff and before I knew it, I created the entire room using only items from Target.  This wasn't my intention, but I think the concept board came out really cute and it will flow with the rest of her home.  Also, being that it's a guest room, it won't receive daily traffic.  Plus, can you say budget friendly!
{Design Board by Amanda Brown of One Girls' Style-All merchandise sources can be found on my Texas Client Project board}
The bedroom is already painted in a light smoky gray/blue color with white trim and has a light tan carpeting.  My mom loves color, so the hits of yellow and orange will be right up her alley.  I prefer rooms that are not matchy matchy, but rather have an eclectic mix of furnishings.  Adding in personal photos and some vintage family pieces will make the room warm and inviting.

As far as accessorizing goes, this is what I'd do...The yellow faux tortoise shell would look cute hanging above the bed, maybe in a little gallery style mix with some colorful prints and travel photos in simple white frames?  Adding a colorful lacquered tray on top of the nightstand with the lamp sitting on it and a pretty little jewelry dish and the clock would add some nice detail.  On the bottom shelf of the nightstand I would add a wire basket with stacks of magazines and on the dresser I'd stack some books with the agate as a bookend and maybe a few beautiful shells and a framed photo.

So what do you guys think?

1GS Guide to Ethnic Decor...

Adding ethnic styling/pieces to interiors both indoors and out is my favorite style direction and the direction I've chosen for my own home.  So, for those of you who, like me, love this look, I wanted to put together a little guide to "ethnic" decor.

Here are some pieces that I adore and either have, want or would use in an interior.  Of course, this is only a small selection of items, but it gets the point across.  These items can be layered into a room to give it that worldly and traveled feel, without being themed, tacky or cheesy.  Remember to chose either authentic or very good quality reproductions when curating a global style.  I've found that this style works best when set against a neutral and simple backdrop.  You don't want everything to be exotic or you'll look like you're living in a theme park or on a movie set.  The feeling should be more of "wow this is the beautiful and stylish space of an interesting person who is obviously well traveled and cultured".  For example, you could pair a modern sofa and chairs with an ethnic rug and exotic accent tables or an Indonesian daybed with a simple seagrass area rug, a modern coffee table and traditional built-in bookcases.  It's all about achieving that right balance.

To see more examples of great ethnic accessories check out my Home Accessories/Decor board on Pinterest.  How do guides to my favorite ethnic textiles and furnishings sound?  Keep an eye out, they my pop-up in the near future.  Hope you guys enjoy this one...I'm off to decide what to do for my husband's birthday tomorrow.  The big 41...Yikes!

Bone Inlay...

I've always loved furnishings and home decor with bone inlay, so I thought I'd share a few of my favorite pieces with you...

Seriously, how chic is this accent chair?!  I'd love to have a pair on either side of a console table in my foyer.

1GS Decor Finds & a Ferry...

Just wanted to pop in and share a few things happening in my world...

Last weekend we went to the flea market and I picked up a vintage leather suitcase, for $10, to add to my collection (I believe this makes number 6)...

yesterday, I picked up a set of six ikat place mats, $5 for all six and an ikat table runner for 8 bucks. I <3 them!

one of my husband's co-workers picked us a bunch of fresh oranges and mandarin oranges from his trees.

and the ferry, well, we took a trip into Sydney, Friday, via the train.  It was the first time we took the train from our town all the way to Circular Quay in Sydney.  We had lunch at Pancakes on the Rocks and took some photos (fun touristy stuff) and decided to take a ferry part of the way home.  We took the River Cat (ferry) from Circular Quay to Parramatta and then took the train the rest of the way home.  The boat trip down Darling Harbor, past the Opera House, under the Harbour Bridge, past mansions atop the cliffs along the coastline and past sailboats anchored in the many coves was/is a trip worth taking!

Hope all of you are having a wonderful weekend!

Chinese Ancestor...

paintings....I've wanted one or maybe two traditional Chinese ancestor paintings/prints for years.  I still kick myself for not buying a huge gorgeous one I found at an antique store in Korea eleven years ago.  Here are a few lovelies to rekindle the desire...

To Paint or Not to Paint a Sofa?

We still have the vinyl mid-century sofa, we purchased in Hawaii, hanging around (actually it's on the porch) and I've been wondering what to do with it...sell it, donate it, put it out on the curb.  Then, I saw a tutorial where they primed and painted the vinyl and used a sharpie to write all over it.  This got my gears turning and I instantly thought, hipster, surfer sofa for Grant's room!  I could paint the sofa white (it's kind of a harvest gold color now) and use either only a black sharpie or maybe a rainbow of colors and write the names of all the best surf spots, the names of the coolest surfers and surfing terms all over the sofa in a graffiti style....actually, I'd have my husband help with this, since he's a pretty great artist.

here are some other examples of painted "graffiti" furnishings...

so, whatcha think?  Crazy or Cool, for a kids room/playroom?  Now to get the hubby on board (always the hardest part).  We were already on the verge of throwing the sofa out, so what's the worst that could happen...it turns out horribly and we toss it.
