Client Project Photos {Striped Walls}

Remember when I shared the after shots of my Texas Client's (a.k.a. Mom) breakfast room?  Well, it turns out that it wasn't quite finished, after all.  While Skyping the other day I suggested she add painted stripes to the walls in the breakfast room and the one long wall in the family room that's connected to the breakfast room.  Two days later, she started.

Today, I thought I'd share a couple in-progress photos.  By the way, she loves how it's looking, but is not happy with me, because the taping/prep is a pain in the butt.  Kind of glad I'm on the other side of the world for this project.  Just a reminder...Who helped build that huge window bench in the breakfast room?  Oh yeah, that would be me!

She's doing a great job!  So what do you think?  Do you like the stripes?  I really like them, I think it adds another layer to the room.

Living Room {Australia}

Will this ever end?  Today, I'm presenting you with yet another design board for our living room.  In the past I've discussed getting a new sofa and how that has been a real challenge.  A couple months ago we searched and searched, but couldn't find anything we absolutely love and could live with for many years to come (when you're spending that kind of money you should really love it).  However, we did end up making a  decision.  I know shocking!  We decided to just order a white custom slipcover for our existing sofa.  I think that was the logical choice, we get a couple more years out of the sofa (until we move back to the States) for the least amount of $$$.  Hopefully, when it finally comes in (from England) we will love it and it will provide the "transformation" we've been seeking.

The sofa we have is a discontinued Ikea model and is slipcovered (we bought it second hand when we arrived in Australia).  Apparently, they had a wide variety of slipcover colors to choose from, but since they no longer sell them I did a search for anyone who makes slipcovers to fit that model and I lucked out and found several.  The only catch is it takes a month or two to make and then has to be shipped.  At first we were looking at mid September, but now it's looking like mid October, before it arrives.

So here is what I'm thinking the room will look like in a couple months....

As you can see there are a couple new things on the board I'm still wanting to purchase.  The jute rug I purchased, from Ikea, last year, is already starting to fray on the corners, so that needs to be replaced.  This time I'm thinking of a flatweave, like a graphic dhurrie or kilim.

And then the lamps...A.K.A my arch nemesis.  They're kind of like the problem I was having with sofas...I just keep hitting a wall at every turn.  The lamps I pictured on the board are from West Elm, but again, I don't care for the shade or the price tag, but I like the lamp and color.  But, I also still really like the Buddha lamp I've blogged about a couple times.  My new teak side tables and the room are in desperate need of ambient lighting.  Designing for oneself is really the most challenging.

We've lived in our current house for two years now (still hard to believe) and I've only hung bamboo roman shades in the master bedroom (we have a pretty large collection of bamboo shades that we carry around from place to place...house to house), so I'm going to finally put them up in the rest of the house.  I also have a few sets of curtains I made about seven or eight years ago, but they're off white and won't look right with the white slipcover, so I think I'll grab a pair of white ones from Ikea, but I want to jazz them up a bit.  How do extra large white pom poms down the leading edge sound (bringing in a little Moroccan flare)?  I think I'm going to order some thick white yarn and make them myself.  I'll also order a few colors of yarn and make cute pom poms like the ones on the inspiration pillow, but I'll add them to the pillows I'm going to make with my new links fabric.

As far as the art goes, I want to create a gallery wall above my antique Chinese console (pictured).  I'm, also, still searching for a frame to fit my otomi...I so don't want to spend money on a custom one.  Lastly, I think I'm going to buy that travel sketch of India I blogged about recently.  They're just so amazing, I'm going to start a collection (good/inexpensive idea for any family who want to know what to buy me for birthdays or Christmases).

So, what do you guys think of my most recent presentation?  It's a bit more colorful than I usually gravitate towards, for myself, but I think my otomi is inspiring me to be more adventurous with color.

A Dream Home {In Bali}

Sometimes I see something and my heart skips a beat and then starts to really pound.  It usually occurs when I see great Architecture or Interior Design (Charlie Hunnam seems to cause this too...hello Mr. Grey).  Does this ever happen to you?  Well, it happened to me today when I laid eyes on the Balinese home of, Danish, fashion designer, Birgitte Raben Olrik.  I found it featured on the blog Gypsy River and it was originally featured in Elle Decoration.

It's just too good not to share...

Minimal, Ethnic, Neutral...

It was love at first sight, when I laid eyes on these interiors...

Clean and Modern with just the right amount of ethnic touches...Minimal Ethnic, if you will...just what I like!

You may be wondering, "why the lack of color?" Well, sometimes, it's just not necessary.  Makes me wonder if I could live in a space that's only about neutrals and textures?  One thing's for sure, I could be quite happy in either of these spaces.

1GS Guide to Ethnic Decor...

Adding ethnic styling/pieces to interiors both indoors and out is my favorite style direction and the direction I've chosen for my own home.  So, for those of you who, like me, love this look, I wanted to put together a little guide to "ethnic" decor.

Here are some pieces that I adore and either have, want or would use in an interior.  Of course, this is only a small selection of items, but it gets the point across.  These items can be layered into a room to give it that worldly and traveled feel, without being themed, tacky or cheesy.  Remember to chose either authentic or very good quality reproductions when curating a global style.  I've found that this style works best when set against a neutral and simple backdrop.  You don't want everything to be exotic or you'll look like you're living in a theme park or on a movie set.  The feeling should be more of "wow this is the beautiful and stylish space of an interesting person who is obviously well traveled and cultured".  For example, you could pair a modern sofa and chairs with an ethnic rug and exotic accent tables or an Indonesian daybed with a simple seagrass area rug, a modern coffee table and traditional built-in bookcases.  It's all about achieving that right balance.

To see more examples of great ethnic accessories check out my Home Accessories/Decor board on Pinterest.  How do guides to my favorite ethnic textiles and furnishings sound?  Keep an eye out, they my pop-up in the near future.  Hope you guys enjoy this one...I'm off to decide what to do for my husband's birthday tomorrow.  The big 41...Yikes!

Minimal Ethnic...

As I've gotten older, I find that I've become more and more drawn to paired down minimal interiors, with fewer pieces that are larger in scale and make statements.  In my minds eye, I still envision these larger statement pieces to be ethnic/primitive in style.  With this in mind, I was thinking about what to call this new(ish) interior direction and "Minimal Ethnic" came to mind.

To illustrate my point, I pulled a few reference photos...

O.K., I'm sure you get the point.  If you'd like to see more images in this "Minimal Ethnic" vein, check out my Interior Love board on pinterest.  Apparently, it's a style I've been attracted to for a while and have been reluctent to fully embrace, because  it involves ditching my more is more mentality...which I'm actually so ready to do NOW!

Home & Blog...

I, recently, discovered a new blog via Pinterest, Once Upon A Tea Time, and started following it.  I found it through a photo of a gorgeous home in India that I fell in love with.  When I found the post connected to the photo, I was thrilled to discover that interior shots of the home had been included.  I'm so taken with this home, so I just had to share it with you all...

Image from Ideal Home and Garden, Aug'11

This is the photo that inspired the post!  I'm seriously in love with this house.  It's a beach bungalow in Nagaon, outside Mumbai (Bombay) in Maharashtra, India.

this home was featured in Ideal Home and Garden and was photographed by Saffronart.  I looked the magazine up online and it's out of India.  The author of Once Upon a Tea Time mentioned that she received it as a digital issue.  If this is the type of work the magazine puts out, I so need to figure out how to receive a digital subscription A.S.A.P!

Dining & Director's Chairs...

I've always been fond of using director's chairs in home decor and actually have a vintage set of my own, which are bar height, that I bought 10 years ago at a flea market in Texas....

Lately, I've seen a lot of chic dining spaces, with the director's chair as the chair of choice and have been very inspired...

I love this dining room by India Hicks...Classic Coastal Style...
